World-famous the Jeruzalem wine region
18 km from your accommodation
The selected wines from the Slovenian wine-growing region are among the highest quality wines in the world. The spacious landscape is shaped by the vineyards, most of which are family-owned and therefore some are more than 100 years old. Mainly white wine types such as Šipon, Chardonnay, Welschriesling, Gelber Muskateller and Muskat Ottonel are grown and pressed, red wines only play a subordinate role.

This region in The north-east of Slovenia was already well-known in the ancient Roman Empire Wine region. The fertile soils and the special microclimate left before especially white wines of high quality mature. And that hasn't changed to this day changed. Through the successful tourist marketing of the wine-growing region Ljutomer - Jeruzalem - Ormož, the region is now a global epitome for excellent wines and an indescribably beautiful landscape.

Let yourself be pampered in one of the many top establishments, e.g. in the Taverna Kupljen, the Malek winegrower's house, or the Hlebec winery.

The magnificent Ptuj Castle in Slovenia's oldest city
20 km from your accommodation

Ptuj is a Slovenian city with one of the longest histories. It is even said that it is the oldest city in the country, dating back to Roman times when it was still called Petovia. The most famous sights of the city are undoubtedly the magnificent Ptuj Castle with a view of the whole city and the Drava River flowing through it. Today, within the fortress, there is a regional museum with various collections that remind us of the rich and valuable history and cultural heritage of Ptuj and the whole country of Slovenia.

A little history
Although Ptuj Castle has a long and alluring history, it is still one of the best-preserved castles in Slovenia. It was originally built and completed in the first half of the 12th century, although records show that a fortress stood there earlier in the 9th century. The last owners of the castle were the Counts of Herberstein, who renovated it in 1912. After the building was nationalized in 1945, it was turned into a museum called the Ptuj Ormož Regional Museum, which is now known as one of the main tourist attractions in Slovenia.

Music, art and costumes
Once in Ptuj, climb the hill and arrive at your destination, where for a fee of around six euros you can enter the castle and take a look at the interesting collections. From old musical instruments and simple everyday objects to breathtaking castle chambers, old furniture, medieval weapons and beautiful Gothic and Baroque paintings. Not so long ago, in 2012, a new permanent collection was set up showing the traditional Carnival costumes and masks typical of the region and its surroundings. You can also take a stroll and see the citadel from the outside or sit in the courtyard cafe and enjoy a traditional dessert called gibanica while taking in the amazing views. Authentic Slovenian souvenirs are available in the castle's souvenir shop, which will remind you of your experiences in the land between the Alps and the Adriatic.

The castle not to be missed
Ptuj Castle is undoubtedly one of those fortresses in Slovenia that should be seen and explored if given the chance. The best and most frequent access is via the stairs, but stepless access is also possible. Observing and getting to know the charming town of Ptuj below the fortress as well as the interesting stories and legends about the castle add to the wonderful experience that the oldest town in Slovenia has to offer.
